Fevers usually come quick, are very hot, and do not last long – much like this relationship, as it was like a sickness that makes one ill.
She may be referring to a one-sided kind of relationship between her and the other person whom she fell head over heels for but she could be referring to the feeling of being in a delusional state of mind that comes with being in a toxic relationship with someone who didn’t treat her like she deserved. It may have felt like she only driving herself insane by placing so much faith and vulnerability and unconditional love into a person that couldn’t show match their actions to their words. It may have taken a great toll on her mental state as well as her ability to look at the situation rationally and logically, rather, continuously believing in the possibility of the other person’s potential. Ultimately, it sounds like she was experiencing so much lust and emotions were running very high because of the extent to which she desired this person.
The antecedent of the pronoun “it” suggests that she has been trying to figure out the source of the problem for a while and “all along it was a fever”. She uses the past tense verb “was” which could indicate the fever (a metaphor for their relationship) has finally broken or reached it’s highest point. A fever is an alert that your body is trying to fight off something; perhaps she realizes that the relationship is the source of the problem (the “it”) and both her mind and soul are rejecting “it.”
