In fact, the Founding Fathers were quite scared of rule by mob, or even majority (which some people might consider, y'know, democracy). Check out James Madison in Federalist Paper #10, where he talks about “the mischiefs of faction.” Defining “faction,” he explicitly says:

By a faction, I understand a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community

(Basically, that’s 18th-century fancy-speak for, “Don’t take our money, yo!”)
