Fab displays his lyrical mastery of wordplay and metaphors in this bar by repeating the word “deadline” which he used in the previous two bars.
In this bar, deadline is a metaphor for a phone line that’s out of order. Fab isn’t talking about making an actual phone call. He’s drawing parallels to the inability to “call it”, as in don’t know what to make of it, so it serves as an alibi. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. He won’t admit to plotting a murder openly, but he insinuates he had something to do with it.
