Th1rt3n is an East Coast band consisting of rapper Pharoahe Monch, drummer Daru Jones, and guitarist Marcus Machado. The trio tackles various political themes with intricate lyrics over hard-hitting instrumentals. They released their debut album, A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism, on January 22, 2021, after working together for a little over a year.

“Cult 45” was released during the 2021 US inauguration week, as Joe Biden became the 46th president. Over an eerie instrumental, Pharoahe Monch uses the prior Trump administration as a backdrop to criticize a corrupt political system as a whole. Although Trump may no longer be the president, his cult-like persona continues to influence a large chunk of the American people, and isn’t something that’ll change overnight.

There seems to be a strong Islamic presence in U.S. prisons, as there is a high rate of inmates who convert to Islam during their incarceration. It is the fastest-growing religion among American prisoners, and it is estimated that roughly 10-15% of all American prisoners are Muslims. A lot of people could potentially look for a Higher Being or a sense of purpose when they find themselves in desperate situations, but why so many specifically choose Islam over other religions is interesting to note.

This can be due to a multitude of reasons, such as Islamic symbolism in hip hop music, but the number one reason is likely the influence of Black Muslim organizations such as the Nation of Islam who have done outreach in U.S. prisons for decades. This outreach gives inmates a sense of normalcy, provides them with a proper network, and makes it easier to transition back into a life outside of prison. Most famously, civil rights activist Malcolm X converted while he was incarcerated.

Allah is the Arabic word for God, and it is believed that it is a contraction of the Arabic “al-Ilāh,” meaning “the God.” Islam is a monotheistic religion, and Allah is the one and only deity that Muslims worship. Although the word holds great significance for Muslims, as even non-Arabic-speaking Muslims will use the Arabic word in their everyday lives, all the Abrahamic religions essentially believe in the same God, so Arabic-speaking Christians, as well as Jews, will also refer to God as Allah.
