50Cent references three song titles in this couplet; “On My Own” by Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald, “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)” by Marvin Gaye and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” by The Temptations.
The chorus to “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” also includes the line, “wherever he laid his hat was his home.“ A "rolling stone” is someone who constantly moves around and doesn’t settle down in one place. 50 Cent was always on tour at the time of this recording.

In the Book of Samuel in the Old Testament, David (the future king of Israel), accepts a battle against a Philistine warrior, Goliath. All the Israelites were terrified of Goliath, and King Saul offered a reward for any person who could defeat him. All David brought with him were a sling and five stones. With only one stone to the head, Goliath was knocked out and David proceeded to chop his head off. This would seem like an uneven match, but the underdog took on the throne.
50 Cent was new in the game at this point and would be considered an underdog. Both Nas and Jay Z were many years deep into the game and were heavyweights. The story of David and Goliath inspires him to believe he could do the same and take on the throne of hip hop.
