Originally written for a Rock Opera, Lifehouse, which was never completed, Pete Townshend included this, and other material, on Who albums.
Lifehouse was a science fiction/apocalyptic story which included a part for a guru (based on Townshend’s relationship with Meher Baba. He is referenced in “Baba O'Reilly”, another song originally meant for Lifehouse.
“Behind Blue Eyes” was intended as the theme song for the villain, Jumbo.
