The story is, in the future, people are living a life entirely programmed and prescribed, called “The Grid”. Individuality is curtailed. Jumbo, the villain who controls the grid, is complaining that he is misunderstood.

It’s about someone who feels forced to hide “behind blue eyes” as in someone who’s always happy and innocent, someone who doesn’t show their true feelings (depression and/or anxiety). The person feels lonely and misunderstood, they think that no one knows what it feels like to fake happieness although thats not the case. The person feels this way presumebly beacuse of their depression and/or anxiety which has overtaken their mind life, and personality compeletly.

Well,nice annotation.Im thinking,this line says basically that the said person is seperated from his senses”no one knows what its like”With this it shows the extreme emotions and anger building up that precipitates anxiety”to be the sad and bad man”(Dichotomy).Behind blue eyes represents the quiet,controlled person that hides his emotions and angee behind his eyes,the window to the soul and the feature we first see socially.Deep meaning.

Originally written for a Rock Opera, Lifehouse, which was never completed, Pete Townshend included this, and other material, on Who albums.
Lifehouse was a science fiction/apocalyptic story which included a part for a guru (based on Townshend’s relationship with Meher Baba. He is referenced in “Baba O'Reilly”, another song originally meant for Lifehouse.
“Behind Blue Eyes” was intended as the theme song for the villain, Jumbo.

The sky can be red at dawn in some weather conditions, hence the proverb, Red sky at night, shepherds' delight; red sky in the morning, shepherds' warning. (It will rain!)
