This refrain is the song’s most direct reference to its namesake, the anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit”.

This line also builds upon the line in “Break The Chain” fro LASERS where Lupe raps:

From the trees we hung
Strange fruit man look at how we swung

Lupe was originally referencing “Strange Fruit” in “Break the Chain”; on this song he has expanded upon those ideas (of racial oppression, i.e. through lynching) and brought them to “fruition”.

These lines describe the poor condition of the room in the (now famous) Chelsea Hotel where Cohen lived at the time.

The decrepit conditions may be a metaphor for his state of mind and body.

The line “don’t drink from that cup its all caked and cracked along the rim"
implies being unable to even participate in optimism or pessimism (the glass being half full or empty).

The narrator gets a sample of the dealer’s heroin. (“Works” is slang for needles. A lot of dealers sell them also.) This was pre-AIDS: who cared about needle sharing?!

Mitchell comes from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Winter temperatures can fall to -40C. Rivers freeze and become skating rinks.

Another Canadian prairie city, Winnipeg MB, created the longest river skating rink.

Not only does Joni wish that she could skate away from her current situation in California, where there is no snow, but the reference to a frozen river indicates a longing for her native Canada.

Marianne is Marianne Ihlen, ex-wife of the Norwegian author Axel Jensen, who was a friend of Leonard. Leonard lived with Marianne in Greece together, in the 1960s, after Axel separated from her.

To quote Leonard (backcover of “Greatest Hits”, 1976):

I began this on Aylmer Street in Montreal and finished it a year or so later at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. I didn’t think I was saying goodbye but I guess I was. She gave me many songs, and she has given songs to others too. She is a Muse. A lot of people I know think that there is nothing more important than making a song. Fortunately, this belief arises infrequently in their conversation.

All young people had to look forward to in the late 70s was shopping schemes (malls) in their towns. There was high unemployment and the economy was in turmoil.

Also, dreams are often an expression of capitalism’s influence on how we perceive reward and consumerism: all anyone wants are “products” pushed by companies, rather than anything truly original.

The UK, another abbreviation like MPLA, UDA or IRA, but one presumed without violent insurrection.

Also, it implies that the UK is not united, given the IRA’s anti-British attitudes.

In the chapter “Into the Inferno” from his autobiography Anger is an Energy, Lydon said:

The IRA-UDA" bit wasn’t so much about the terrorism and political shenanigans going on in Ireland, it was more, ‘Hang on, I thought this was the UK.’ The alleged United Kingdom, not so united after all, huh? With all these political intrigues, divided we fall. I always viewed the United Kingdom as good people getting on with each other, not the Empire. I think, clearly my instance, I wasn’t promoting British colonialism – the opposite."
