D'Angelo Barksdale is a member of the Barksdale organization, a drug distribution network controlled by his uncle Avon.

He’s currently on trial for the murder of “Pooh” Blanchard, another member of the organization who apparently confronted Barksdale for whatever reason. Things ended up getting physical and D'Angelo panicked and shot Pooh in front of witnesses.

A buy-bust is a routine police procedure within the War on Drugs. It tends to involve small-time dealers or middlemen who are somehow set up by the police, either through undercover officers or snitches.

In this case, a West Baltimore man was caught by his girl sneaking around – using her car to do so, at that. In an act of revenge, she went and snitched to the police about his drug involvement.

The theory behind buy-busts is that police can start at the bottom of the food chain with lowly street dealers, and eventually make their way up to the major players by turning witnesses. Solid theory…really shitty practice.

It’s just a bit ironic that an officer who had nothing to do with the murder investigation, has to go find the lead officer and update him on what’s going on in the case.

Municipal courthouses often share a building with law enforcement offices. Bunk is here to take care of some work, while McNulty is going to linger around the courts for a bit.

That we see Buck and McNulty first through the security TV continues a repeated and significant motif (present in the credits for the show and throughout the series) of viewing characters through such technologies of surveillance. Of course, this is what the show, “The Wire” as in wire-tap is all about. Normally, but not always, the cops are on the other side looking in.

The argument that the U.S. has inched closer and closer to an authoritarian security state since 9/11/01 is not a hard argument to make. Americans voted and allowed this to happen. What is Paul’s solution to this? Simple…just eliminate the U.S. government.

There has been a lot of study on post-authoritarian societies and the outcomes of those sorts of transitions. Often times, the primary outcome seems to be the emergence of a neo-liberal corporatist regime in its place.

In other words, based on Paul’s stated policies and voting record his solution to all our problems is to swap out our current bureaucratic authoritarians (the federal government) with new bureaucratic authoritarians (corporations). Like many of our leaders, Paul believes that the markets can do no harm, thus, it’s better than having a strong federal government.

One of the repercussions of America’s fast-paced, always working, society is that we have lost touch with our social connections in the community.

Like most small towns, Mayberry presumably has a more close knit community, where you know everyone by their first name.

Triple Entendre

  1. The Andy Griffith Show was literally in black and white
  2. The phrase “black and white” means clear cut or a simple situation.
  3. North Carolina was a segregationist state.

That last one is a joke…sorta.

No days are sacred anymore when it comes to the capitalist agenda.

Since 1991, the U.S. has outpaced nearly all other industrialized countries when it comes to working long hours. This is even after we were supposedly going to work less hours, thanks to the rise in technology.

Here’s a classic representation by Charlie Chaplin of the modern man’s problem:
