Kendrick often enhances his storytelling through the use of motifs. Some of common plot elements we hear repeated in many of Kendrick’s songs:

• Watching cartoons – Also repeated here.
• Dominoes – A favorite pastime of the black community, this game served as an anchor throughout the plot of good kid m.A.A.d city.
• His uncle Tony – Mentioned in “Money Trees”.

Although many of Kendrick’s stories contain these repetitive plot pieces, they are not the same stories by any means. The use of motifs can be used to represent “universal truths” or rituals of life.

“Career-ending” may be a little dramatic in this day and age but there are a handful of complications that can come with an injury like this, like acute compartment syndrome, nerve damage or even osteomyelitis (bone infection), all of which would mean bad news for George’s career.

Nonetheless, George actually has two things going for him with this injury:

1. Six hospitals in the Indianapolis metro area are ranked as “high-performing” when it comes to orthopedics.
2. The position of George’s injury should allow for intramedullary nailing which will be huge for preventing atrophy during this recovery.

If you put a metal rod in it, you can walk to much sooner. The advantage of that is you can limit atrophy quite a bit. Sometimes, patients can have quite a bit of atrophy all the way to the hip when the bone comes through the skin and that can slow the healing process quite a bit.

This is another reference to papal indulgences and the Catholic belief in a treasury of merit, in particular. The idea behind the treasury of merit is that Christ’s sacrifice was so great that it resulted in an abundance of merit, which can be shared with everyone on Earth.
