This beast is making Jean feel like dirt, hence her committing suicide. She compares this to her possible subordination as a woman, Secretary being the 2002 film in which Maggie Gyllenhaal becomes sexually submissive to boss, James Spader.

A play on words:

  • “Domepiece” is slang for head, which one would hide under their sheets if they were scared at night. Jean is saying that she has recovered her peaceful state of mind through suicide.

  • Alternately, “piece” on its own is slang for weapon, giving the line a much grittier edge. People sometimes hide weapons in/by their bed due to paranoia of being attacked while sleeping.

Listening to the intro, it seem that this whole verse is constructed to look like a suicide note. Jean has stated on Twitter that the title is in reference to the revered journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s suicide note.

This opening line is typical of such a note, as one of the main reasons someone would kill themselves is to escape a chaotic and undesirable life.

If you’ve had a glance at the lyrics for this song, you can gather that it doesn’t really provide much in the way of explaining itself.

One can identify a clear structure in the verses of naming a famous political figure, and then dismissing them with odd insults about love and sex.

This relationship has been identified by both Nicky Wire and Richey Edwards as about the theme of failure: it implies that both politics and love always leads to it. However as was always with the mind of Edwards, no one can be 100% sure what it is about.

All adolescent leaders of men FAILED. All love FAILS. If men of the calibre of Lenin and Trotsky failed, then how can anyone expect anything to change. Won’t get fooled again.

– Richey Edwards

…on the other hand, you being on “point” means you’re sucking someone’s dick. This comes from the term “hooker’s point”, which is the streets or area in which everyone knows prostitutes walk for money. Of course, comparing someone to a prostitute is pretty harsh, and they often have low pay and drug problems too.

Atlantic City, New Jersey, famous for its boardwalks and gambling, is perhaps one of the better known places for prostitution in America. In 2006, there was a widely reported case of multiple prostitute murders, so maybe Royce is referring to that.

There is a documentary called “Hookers at the Point”, which inspired the Action Bronson song of the same.

Documentaries, such as ones about the world wars, often use archive footage that was taken at the time on early cameras, which were much more primitive than they are now. As such, b&W grainy footage often creates the impression that something is very old and, due to there not being many cameras at that time, important enough to have been filmed.

The moves Monch has made throughout his career, including his work with Organized Konfusion and his later solo albums, are historically important documents and major changes in the rap game, pretty much all of them meeting critical acclaim and underground success. Monch’s story, then, is similar to an archived documentary as it bears many milestones and important images/sounds that are needed to build a picture of the era they were taken in.

This song was first released in 2011 on Pharoahe Monch’s album W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), so sets the tone from a near-future political disaster, like the V For Vendetta comic/film did.

Aside from the squawking shitting flying creatures of the same name, “bird” is also slang for a woman (mostly used in Britain). Perhaps Ride is having some lady trouble. Or more likely the birds symbolise something else like freedom, peace, or vulnerability.

Or maybe MC Ride just fucking hates birds.

Yo-Yo states that her flow is a public display of rap brilliance, much like the term “dogging” is slang for having sex in public. She also refers to herself as being dominant, “the best male”, to demonstrate how badly she penetrates Cube on the track (that’s pretty grim imagery, to be honest…)
