The “oh my gosh” sample is a nod to the frequent cry of jungle/drum and bass MCs. Typically, in ragga-style jungle sets, an MC would be on stage along with the DJ to keep the crowd hyped and “Oh my gosh!” is proclaimed to indicate how floored the music is making the MC; thus, the crowd as well.

Ragga drum and bass is predicated on the Amen drum break, which Jamie uses in this track. The amen breakbeat was originally introduced in 1969 by drummer Gregory Sylvester “G.C.” Coleman on the track “Amen Brother” by The Winstons. Here’s a snippet of the original and then the sped up D&B version:

Jamie would go on to tell Pigeons & Planes exactly where the sample came from, but it’s not as important as the idea behind his representation of jungle MCs from late 90s/early 00s rave culture, as purveyors of the vibe.

The lead single to The Drums' third LP, Encyclopedia.

To paraphrase what Jonny said about this song on Spotify’s Encyclopedia commentary, this song is about comforting the outsider and finding a safe place, possibly from those who would wish them harm because they’re different.

Arguably Premier’s most elaborate production. Guru and Inspectah Deck rip the mic telling a tale of religion, prophets, spirituality, war and all that is supreme.

John Dankworth’s “Two Piece Flower” is sampled throughout the track.

Two players in particular are immediately affected by this change:

  • Mark McGwire, who enters his 9th year of eligibility in 2015 (received 11% votes for 2014)

  • and the polarizing case of Tim Raines, who will enter his 8th year of eligibility in 2015 (received 46.1% votes for the Hall in 2014)

While McGwire likely won’t pierce through the harsh stigma of being one of the steroid era’s most notorious cases, Raines' time to cement his role as the greatest leadoff hitter of the 80’s and 90’s not named Rickey Henderson has been cut from 8 years to 3 years.

This is a play on how coffee can make a lover feel. How that hot winter cup can make you think of your lover’s warmth and vice versa with a cold brew.

The coffee ritual and its vibe for a couple in the AM evokes the same feel that Dave Matthews establishes on “Stay or Leave”… Namely how a cup of coffee shared can make one reminisce on the best moments of a relationship.

No…that’s not a typo. the AAC stands for the American Athletic Conference and it inherited the Big East’s place in NCAA’s “Big 6 Conferences”.

Think of it as the Big East, with a new name and a hybrid of teams that stood out in other mid-major conferences and the Big East.

The internal struggle of someone looking for a companion. It’s unclear whether Future Islands' Samuel T. Herring finds what he was looking for within himself or in a new lover, but the lyric implies that he stared out into the horizon and the answer was right in front of him…in the beauty of the world.

The line “All that glitters is gold” is a reference to Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, where the Prince of Morocco says, “All that glisters is not gold”; while there are a few pre-Shakespearean examples of this metaphor (Chaucer, Aesop), the line in our popular culture is more derivative of Shakespeare’s usage.

This is a hopeful proclamation from Sam Herring… Where some of rock’s notable predecessor’s have sung that “All that glitters ISN’T gold”, meaning that appearances may be deceiving, or on a macro level, that the world is a cruel place.

Neil Young sang it first on “Don’t Be Denied” and then Built To Spill elaborated on “You Were Right” with:

You were right when you said all that glitters isn’t gold

Herring is a light at the end of the tunnel for the listener and perhaps the world isn’t such a terrible place after all?

Surprisingly enough, even FoxNews presented the facts objectively and shedded some light on how the parade’s exclusionary antics have affected the sponsorship climate for this year’s parade:

The move by Guinness follows similar moves by fellow beer companies Heineken and Sam Adams, the latter of which pulled its sponsorship from Sunday’s parade in the traditional Irish stronghold of South Boston. The decision also left Ford Motor Company as the only major U.S. company sponsoring the New York City parade, which dates back to 1762.
