It should also be noted that the singer of Harvey Danger, Sean Nelson, was an editor for the Seattle paper The Stranger around this time, so it would make sense for him to reference a magazine/journalism in this song.

Building up on the idea that the singer genuinely wants to challenge the norms but considers himself and everyone else as people just complain while doing nothing, this part questions the methods they believe are changing the world. Zines were independent publications that became one of the primary ways the dissatisfied youth expressed their views on society during the 90’s, but given that they had a small reach and that the only people who read them were grunges themselves, the singer is pointing how idiotic the whole endevour is… While wanting to do the same thing himself, which frustrates him even more.

AV Club describes “Flagpole Sitta” as “exploring the tension between being both a cultural observer and a participant—when you’re self-aware enough to notice how the underground is being co-opted, but yet simultaneously caught up in (and horrified by) this commodification.”

The song was used as the theme song for all but the first season of the long running British sitcom “Peep Show” (2003-2015).

Not sure if this is mentioned somewhere and I’ve missed it but the title “Flagpole Sitta” is a reference to a fad during the 1920’s and 30’s of Pole Sitting. People would sit atop a pole as a sort of endurance test and try to set records of who could sit the longest. This is fitting given the lyrics of the song about “exploring the tension between being both a cultural observer and a participant”.

Lust is an intense desire. It is usually thought of as excessive sexual wants.

In Dante’s Purgatorio, the penitent walks within flames to purge himself of lustful/sexual thoughts and feelings. In Dante’s Inferno, unforgiven souls of the sin of lust are blown about in restless hurricane-like winds symbolic of their own lack of self-control to their lustful passions in earthly life.

it’s a reference to the Christian concept of Original Sin where neither of them are guilty per se of what’s going down. Their very humanity places them in this situation, again.

She is different when “the night” is in her heart, basically they do not have a relationship in daylight. He might be waiting for the night so he can crawl into her heart, but latter parts of the song don’t imply a great deal of depth or heart to the relationship.
