The joker and the thief might be references to the lower class of society. Those characters have an archetypal significance which historically gives them a low position in society. Their search for a way out may be less about their particular pain and hardships connected to being in the lower class and more about finding themselves in a world where they are not powerful. Given that they are not the most upstanding characters in traditional society, they may also be running from those with power.

This song has been connected to Isaiah 21 in the bible. Verses 6-7 (NRSV) say,

“For thus the Lord said to me: Go, post a lookout, let him announce what he sees. When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently…Look, there they come, riders, horsemen in pairs!””

Isaiah is writing from the perspective of the oppressed and exiled Israelites. The entire chapter broods over the doom of Babylon- the empire at the time, the oppressor. They may be the pair of riders coming to the watchtower.

The characters of the joker and the thief also provide allusion to the two criminals hanging beside Jesus in Luke 23. One of the criminals ridicules and mocks Jesus in a joking sort of way. The other criminal is traditionally described as a thief. Both are looking for a way off the cross, out the hands of the Roman Empire.

This could be a triple meaning:

1.) He is not the most tech savvy person so he is curious as to why their eyes are red (camera flash causes red eye, a problem most computer software or the photo app on your iPhone/iPod can now fix

2.) They were high/drunk that day and that is why Joey has something on his head, Chad laughs at the picture, and he is asking why were their eyes red because they were high and he can’t remember. Drugs and alcohol in large amounts can cause your eyes to go red.

3.) Before or during the picture taking place, Chad and his friends were in the middle of laughing so hard and so much tears came to their eyes causing them to go bloodshot red and puff up. Yet Chad forgot the joke they said

Double entendre of a wolf that takes Little Red Riding Hood (sexually) as she morphs into a beast with him while he literally rides her under her Clitoral hood.

Also the howling is literally moaning by her and he says tell your grandma and your mama too. In other words, moan loudly enough to tell everyone and wake everyone in earshot that you’re climaxing, it’s true.

The curse is not solely the curse of racial stigma and constant sexual desire, but it also brings the curse of the “gift that keeps on giving”. That may be a nod to a STD that comes with a bite to seal their fate.

Also it references the double entendre earlier when he refers to her mirroring his malady, which is both the ravenous sexual appetite personified in werewolf or beastly form and a possible STD that is his curse.

One interpretation of this song can suggest a black lover playfully addressing their white (or mixed race? – “mongrel”) “playmate”; the werewolf metaphor emphasizes both the racist stereotype of the sexually deranged black male, and the societal stigma their white lover will risk acquiring by laying with them. Read like so, this verse could convey something like: “You’re as much a sexual creature as I am, but you walk through life able to conceal it – How lucky you are.” Social privilege, etc etc.
