Werewolves come out when the moon is full and cause mayhem and destruction. Busting boxes and gutting fish utilize slang for female genitalia to create double entendres that compare passionate sexual acts to a creature breaking out of its cage to feed.

“Say, say, my playmate” is the opening line to the children’s clapping game of the same name in which a kid invite another to play, but ultimately cannot, because the playmate is sick with the flu.

By following the line with “won’t you lay hands on me” the narrator is not only referencing the fact that, in the game, the hands should touch, but also inviting someone to join in the sickness, the “malady” or “tragedy” (lycanthropy, perhaps an allegory for STDs), which is contagious by physical contact.

“lay hands on me” – laying on of hands is also a reference to faith healers. In this context it’s a sexual suggestion and the conflation of the two meanings is a little blasphemous, which suits the song.

The opening lines of the schoolyard rhyme are “Say, say, my playmate / Won’t you come play with me / And bring your dollies three / Climb up my apple tree”. While the tune is different, the rhythm and rhyme of this song’s opening lines mirrors those lines directly.

This whole song is about a tormented man that has fallen in love with a prostitute. Hence he refers to her as his “playmate”, he wants her to have the same and feelings “mirror my malady”. She is a lady of the night therefore works then the moon is full, which could also mean he comes by roughly once a month to satisfy his animalistic desire… to be blount… fuck her like a wild dog. Normally he can keep this side of him under control but eventually his mind set changes and he loses control over his body as described by “My mind has changed my body’s frame, but, God, I like it
My heart’s aflame, my body’s strained, but, God, I like it”. An just like that its over leaving only to return again on the next full moon.

“Slicing up eyeballs” is a reference to the opening of Un chien andalou in which a shot of a woman’s face match-cuts on action to another shot of a sheep’s eyeball being sliced by a razor to give the impression that the woman’s eye is being cut.

That scene shocked the hell out of the 1920s audience, which was just becoming accustomed to seeing ankles on women. It’s even shocking today!
