Dien Bien Phu was a French garrison town in North-Western Vietnam, all of Vietnam having been under French administration since 1887. Being a garrison town, it was completely unexpected that the town would fall to the attacking Communists freedom-fighters. As such, it marked a turning point in French presence in Indo-China, ultimately leading to French withdrawal. The resulting United States involvement eventually became known as the Vietnam War.
