why do you have “If you wake by five” as the ending of verse one? Watch his mouth in the official video for this song. He clearly mouths the words “if ya wait like five” as in if you wait five minutes. Every lyric site on google is wrong…

I don’t think he’s saying his lungs were underdeveloped, I think he’s just saying he coughed “like a rookie” as you said above. My group of friends used to call it virgin lungs, when someone hacked like hell their first few times smoking.

Butane is a gas that cause drowsiness, asphyxia, among other effects. It’s basically an unhealthy gas. He’s making heroin junkies look sane, because he injects an even TOUGHER chemical.

Although, don’t read TOO much into this… Beck’s lyrics on this jam were very off the cuff:

“The raps and vocals are all first takes. If I’d known the impact it was going to make, I would have put something a little more substantial in it.”

Butane is commonly used to process marijuana when extracting THC for “dabs” and providing a higher potency of drug. But if not filtered out it will poison the user.
Cutting the Junkie could be a reference to wanting to stop the use, self harm or cutting the other users out of his life. Very commonly they tell users their best chance of kicking an addiction is to sever all ties with all users. Having other users around is a constant temptation and often leads to further use.

Butane in the bloodstream would be a result from inhaling a lot of it through smoking lots of cigarettes and cannabis.

I’m straight is likely a reference to the Modern Lovers song “I’m Straight,” a song about not being drunk or high. For the narrator to say she is “straight” is to say, that she is not intoxicated, capable of having this conversation, and more to the point, not so emotionally impacted that she is irrational. The next line, “enough” undercuts this point, adding depth to the character. She is, in fact, not truly straight, only straight enough.

I think this whole song is about whether let someone go or plea to stay. It’s about pride and subjection. She can’t really decide.

This song concerns itself with the unknowing nature of loss. After the loss of her partner she feels all aspects of her world are pulled away and she seeks a new start in a new place , a new country perhaps. “pack up , i’m straight- enough.
There is a sense of urgency – your situation is poisonous as are the memories of this place

This verse almost makes it seem as if it isn’t just one person having this conversation. This could be her responding to him and his sultry vocals exude the pain he’s going through from being rejected.

Good idea but I think “so” at the beginning invalidates that. So is a conjunction, connecting the two previous ideas. coming back to her doesn’t make since with the words. He’s finally getting over this girl who broke up with him a long time ago. Read my comment below and thumb it up or down if you think it has validity or not.

He is stating his final advice to whoever is with his girl. The whole song is a statement that he is coming back for her.
