The mascot of the Kellogg’s brand cereal “Froot Loops” is Toucan Sam. Lupe is using this as a reference to Uncle Sam, who urged Americans to fight in war.

The cemetery full of tomahawks is a metaphor for America, in which the American government forced Native Americans off their lands, frequently killing them. Native American burial grounds are often depicted as terrifying, haunted places. Lupe is saying that America is haunted by what they did in the past.

In the cartoon My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Lupe Toucan’s character is described as loud-mouthed, dominating and materialistic which is a stereotypical description of Americans.

Lupe uses “Froot Loops” as a metaphor for people who do not know what they are doing. Doing somersaults is an expression used to describe feelings of nervousness and unease. Pigeons are an allusion to people living in poorer areas.

Lu is describing the dynamic in America where the more powerful fuck over (give the middle finger to) poorer people.

While the man was sentenced to what many would say is the equivalent to two lives in jail years, the female was lucky enough not to get imprisoned.

If she was one of the perpetrators she may now be living a double life (using a different name and denying her true identity) to avoid getting caught.

Another possibility is that in many countries men tend to receive much harsher sentences than women even though both may have received the same financial benefits. So she may be enjoying the money and life on the outside, while he is locked up. She may be living a double life by forgetting that her husband is locked up and indeed she may have found a new man “he need another wife”.

“Man, he need another wife” could also refer to the “wives” in prisons. Often, other male prisoners are used as replacements for their real wives.

The crime, e.g. a robbery, failed even though it has been planned in advance, leading to the inmates to be caught. This is the reason they went to prison in the first place.

It also references the mess the prison system has become.

“Best laid plan” comes from the saying “the best laid plans of mice and men” which originates from Robert Burn’s poem “To a Mouse”, upon which John Steinbeck based the title of his 1937 novel “Of Mice and Men”.

“You had to be there”, it’s just not the same from a recording.

It’s too [many] reels as shooting for a hundred weeks (almost two years) would be an epic film production as many films are shot in between 20 and 60 days.

Two reels would look like 00 so Lu’s continuing the hundred wordplay from the previous lines.

Wordplay – real/ reel, too/ two
