It’s where our hero learns the value of community, discovers that he’s a circuit on the great motherboard – that is, society – and his purpose is to be a conduit for the energy of those around him.

The theme of the song is social responsibility.

More like the electrocuted man. Patrick had to spend a few hours in the Emergency Room after being electrocuted by a faulty microphone at a performance venue.

Patrick actually tweeted the lyrics to electric man around the same time that he was being treated in hospital after being electrocuted.

In the painting from the original song, in the corner, you see this tiny guy falling into the ocean. It’s been interpreted as: It’s a big world, and people go about their business, and little tragedies are happening all the time, and what are you going to do?
– Patrick Stickles to Pitchfork

He grew up dreaming of being something big and making something of his life but as he ages he just works and everything becomes meaningless and ugly. He sees himself, in the future, becoming the working, suburban Christian that made him start to rebel in the first place. He will become the man plowing while the person he thought he was going to become will fall off the ledge to drown. He will become so blind that he won’t even notice himself drowning.

It is kind of the continuation to the last song, Arms Against Atrophy. The last song leaves him worrying about what life will treat him like and this song is the horrible possibility that will become of him.

The sequel to this song is Landscape with fall of Icurus that takes place on their third album. It deals with the same theme and painting.

One way to interpret this song is that it’s about a literal wizard, such as Gandalf from *The Lord of the Rings. ‘Misty Morning’ could refer to the Misty Mountains of Middle Earth.

Another way to interpret is that it’s all about the band’s drug dealer. ‘Misty morning, clouds in the sky’ could reveal the depressing atmosphere before he shows up. Perhaps he dressed like this:

As a head of state, despite seemingly absolute power, you are beholden to the interests of those whose support you need to maintain power. Thus being a monarch can feel like being a puppet on a single string, as you may have a lot of power, but never complete agency.

Another interpretation of this line would be as a reference to hanging from a noose, as one would also be strung from a lonely rope or “string”. This would tie back to the rest of the verse as it describes the prosecution of the king.
