A reference to Icurus who along with his dad fashioned a pair of wax wings, but alas flew to close to the sun and his wings melted allowing him to fall to his death

It is meant as a lesson on failed ambition, but the line talks about our desire for money as well. Just as a following your dreams will allow you to float your ambition could be your downfall.

  • Gold leaf wings (not following your dreams instead chasing money) could be seen as guaranteed to make you fall and sink.

alternatively

  • The gold leaf wings float and are the wings of the rich they can go as high as they like. The wax wings on the other hand melt; the poor are limited in their ambitions.

This is a two-fold biblical reference. The pillar of salt is referring to story of Lot’s wife. Angels told Lot to take his family and flee the sinful city of Sodom and not to look back no matter what. Lot’s wife could not resist the temptation to look back and was transformed into a pillar of salt.

The pillar of sand is referring to the parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock, and the foolish man who built his house on the sand, which was then swept away when a storm came.

In saying that he built his castles on pillars of salt and pillars of sand, the speaker is saying that he put his foundations on traitors and fools.
