This refers to the first actual Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln floated to the South on September 22, 1862. He proceeds to quote this version of the proclamation word for word, the equivalent of saying:

You have had your warning, and this is the legal notice that you haven’t responded to the warning and therefore I am taking action.

These 7 counties and 2 cities are located in the Tidewater Region of Virginia. The region was controlled by Union forces at the time.

#FUN FACT

The term tidewater may be correctly applied to all portions of any area, including Virginia, where the water level is affected by the tides (more specifically, where the water level rises when the tide comes in).

West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Convention (the convention where Virginia’s state legislature made the decision to secede), and holds the distinction of being the only state to form from breaking away from a seceding state to remain in the Union.

These Parishes (Louisianan counties) were already under the control of the Union Army at the time of the Proclamation, thus exempting them from emancipating their slaves.

Lincoln NEVER said that he would free all the slaves, just slaves living in states in rebellion (red). That means that slaves in Confederate territory already controlled by the Union Army were not freed.

The Border States (yellow) also held slaves, but remained a part of the Union when the rest of the South seceded. To stay in their good graces, President Lincoln could not free slaves in these states.

#REMEMBER

President Lincoln’s top priority throughout the Civil War was not to free slaves, but to preserve the Union.

The issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation changed the purpose of the war. Since Lincoln officially declared the Confederate States of America as a separate entity in conflict with the Union, the war had to be won in order for the Emancipation Proclamation to be enforced. This is the official document making the Civil War a war of moral principles, considering the focus of the war had officially become the freeing of the slaves in the Confederacy.

Lincoln freed the slaves, right? WELL…some. The Emancipation Proclamation was double-headed: a political maneuver to discourage Britain from entering the Civil War and a last-ditch effort to end the war early.

Rapped from the perspective of Kendrick’s conscience, rather than from Kendrick himself.

Kendrick explains this verse and how it relies on the art of peer pressure in this video, at a high school. The art of peer pressure is a recurring theme within the album.

TDE’s in-house engineer MixedByAli talked about mixing this verse in an interview with Complex:

When I heard the second verse and heard his conscience come in, I knew we had to do something to switch it up right there. So we changed that, did some panning, some vocal animations and stuff like that…I was just playing with some delays, some reverbs, tweak it out make it sound real eerie.

A figure of speech in which an absent or imaginary person is represented as speaking.

Examples

  • The markets expect bold action from the central banks.

  • If Miller Huggins was alive today, he’d be turning over in his grave

—Yogi Berra, speaking of a former Yankees manager.

Another great example would be Kendrick Lamar’s song “Swimming Pools”.

Sun Tzu was a Chinese military strategist and general who authored The Art of War about 2,500 years ago. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly known to be the definitive work on military strategy and tactics of its time. The central premise of the book emphasizes fluidity over rigidness, and you don’t have to be a general to apply its principles to your own life. The principles of Sun Tzu, if properly applied, can help you achieve the following (and much more!):

  • Success in relationships
  • Becoming a BOSS at your job
  • Creating an environment conducive to wealth accumulation
  • Success in achieving whatever goals you have
  • Dealing successfully with unforeseen challenges
