Due the the sexual ambiguity of the name, some posit that he is recounting a homosexual relationship, while others think it is a strong personal, but platonic relationship, with another man. Others believe Springsteen changed the name “Mary” (a name featured in most of the songs and considered to be the protagonist of the album) to fit the rhyme scheme

Bruce Springsteen’s assistant was named Terry MaGovern. Bruce Springsteen’s 2007 album Magic featured a song called “Terry’s Song” in honor of his recently departed assistant and friend. It is possible that this song is written about his friend Terry, however the apparent romantic relationship between the two characters in the song complicates this interpretation.

She’s a classy girl that dresses well. Her Egyptian ring is of particular attraction because is shimmers on her hand. Evidently, she is a collector of hypnotic items, hence a walking antique.

The phrase “you’re a walking antique” is a clever follow-up to “she’s a hypnotist collector” for she will hypnotize you and make you hers, i.e., she will collect you as she does any other antique. Again, this puts the lie to the title of the song–clearly it should be “I Belong to Her”.

Jesse Woodson James (September 5, 1847 – April 3, 1882) was an American outlaw, gang leader, bank robber, train robber and murderer from the state of Missouri and the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang.

Dylan is saying that he might look like the one taking aim (Robert Ford) but he feels like the one getting shot in the back (Jesse James)–perhaps as a result of the way he is picked apart by former “fans” and the music press.

Or perhaps it is the miscegenist narrator speaking here: He is breaking the law, which means he looks like the aggressor–but in reality, he is the victim of an unjust law.

There is a popular misinterpretation that “Like a Rolling Stone” was written about Bob Dylan’s relationship with the mentally unstable heiress, model, and Andy Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick.

Sedgwick allegedly had a brief fling with Dylan (Dylan has routinely denied this), and was crushed when Dylan married Sara Lownds in November 1965.

However, “Rolling Stone” was written before Sedgwick suffered her collapse (brought on by a drug addiction and mental illness). The apparent references to her seem to be coincidental. (It’s also a bit of an inapt characterization: Edie was slumming for kicks, whereas the “you” in this song has fallen on hard times due to her world collapsing).

Dylan biographer Michael Gray wrote that Sedgwick had no connection with “Like a Rolling Stone,” but instead was an inspiration for multiple songs on the Dylan album Blonde on Blonde, such as “Just Like a Woman” and “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.”

Anne Hoppus, Mark Hoppus‘ sister, waiting in line to use a payphone, writes in Tales From Beneath Your Mom,

Eavesdropping on his conversation, I realized he was prank calling a dental service. I glanced around looking for his audience. But there was no one, Tom wasn’t entertaining anyone but himself. He had waited in line just to make himself laugh. I knew then that this was someone I needed to hang with.

Tom, of course, met Mark through Anne and the brotherhood was formed.
