doubt: fear.

Gertrude believes that Hamlet is upset because his father recently died, and Gertrude married his uncle so shortly after the old king’s death. There is no indication in the play that Gertrude has any suspicions about the murder, and she definitely doesn’t know about Hamlet’s experience with the Ghost. However, critics (as well as directors and actors) differ on just how clueless or savvy they believe Gertrude to be.

Here, in a straightforward style, she articulates the most obvious explanation and eschews the convoluted reasoning and scheming of Claudius and Polonius. Demonstrating Occam’s razor, Gertrude argues that the simplest explanation, “the main,” may be the best. Gertrude has fewer lines than other characters and yet she often speaks for the simple truth. Her speeches demonstrate that she adheres to her own advice to Polonius: “more matter, with less art.”

SPOILER ALERT

It was prophesied that he would kill his father and marry his mother. This character gave rise to Sigmund Freud’s infamous theory of the “Oedipus complex,” whereby male children desire to embrace their mothers sexually and desire to kill their fathers.
