After the 2012 NFL Draft many draft pundits and NFL fans alike believed that the Chiefs had drafted another “workout warrior” in the mold of previous Chief defensive linemen busts Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson. This season Poe proved he was a whole lot more than just a workout warrior. At the NFL Combine Poe did 44 reps on the Bench Press, the record for the year, and ran a ridiculous 4.98 40 Yard Dash. Ironically the same attributes that defined his performance at the Combine, and in the process rose his stock in the draft astronomically, are the same attributes that have helped him to be successful in the NFL. His quickness of the ball is amazing and his great strength has allowed him to become one of the best young DT’s in the game today.

The only Grammy nomination Charles Mingus ever received was for these liner notes in 1971. Unlike his counterparts like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, the Grammy’s were unable to define Mingus' music in a vacuum, an offense apparently indicative of his inability to limit himself to one musical lane, but also an offense punishable by ostracization by the music awards community. It is ironic that the very reason Mingus was unable to gain awards and therefore respect in the Grammy community is the very thing he talks about within these liner notes. For Mingus “each jazz musician is supposed to be a composer. Whether he is or not, I don’t know.”

Mingus believed

it is time our children were raised to think they can play bassoon, oboe, English horn, French horn, lull percussion, violin, cello. The results would be-well the Philharmonic would not be the only answer for us then. If we so-called jazz musicians who are the composers, the spontaneous composers, started including these instruments in our music, it would open everything up, it would get rid of prejudice because the musicianship would be so high in caliber that the symphony couldn’t refuse us

It was because of this though process that Mingus has become a footnote in the mainstream musical community, but it is also because of this that Mingus remains one of the most innovative musicians to ever live.

“The Shoes of the Fishermans Wife Are Some Jiveass Slippers” is actually a rearrangement of Mingus' earlier composition “Once Upon a Time, There Was a Holding Corporation Called Old America”. This version of the song was orchestrated and arranged by Sy Johnson. The title of this song would again be used as the title of one of Mingus' later LP’s.

Let My Children Hear Music is a unique feather in Mingus' musical cap. It is an album full of Mingus' characteristic spontaneity, but in a way that is more organized and almost classical in nature. Mingus has regarded it as the “best album [he] ever made”.

It is rare to find an album that can find one musical and completely manipulate the idea to the point that by the time the vinyl stops spinning the listener has already been pulled in 17 different directions. This is the album that does this to the listener. In Mingus' tempo-less, rule-less world, any idea that is not able to be manipulated and looked at in a million different ways is not an idea worth exploring at all. It is for this reason that Blues & Roots is a seminal album in both Mingus' career and for blues music in a more general sense. The album expanded the full scope of blues music and, in Mingus' own words, showed the world that “blues can do more than just swing”.

Pharrell stays winning. Weeks after receiving 7 Grammy nominations he was nominated for his first Academy Award for his song in Despicable Me 2. Add in the fact that he apparently hasn’t aged a day since high school and his 4 Grammy Awards he has already won in his career, then you have to admit that Pharrell is living the dream.

UPDATE: After winning 4 Grammy Awards this year alone Pharrell has cemented himself as a legend. He’s also much more stylish than you.

Drake’s success has garnered him attention from some amazing people, namely, His Airness Michael Jordan and the whole Jordan brand.

Drake signed a lucrative shoe deal with the Jordan brand as part of Drake’s desire to dip his toes into the fashion world. Drake’s reaction to the news was positive

“Today also happens to be one of the best days of my life, you know, growing up, I’m sure we all idolized this guy – he goes by the name of Michael Jordan. So today, I came to Portland, Oregon and I officially became inducted into the Team Jordan family.”

Another Chris Childs creation. Diene is used when someone says something funny, but not quite to the point where you are ded yet. It is a creative misspelling of the word “dying”

EX:

Nappy: Nobody likes u CC
CC: diene

Chris is admittedly an Organic Chemistry nerd so the original definition of diene is:

a hydrocarbon that contains two carbon double bonds

Diene is the OG of the -ene family, but the -ene ending has been borrowed and expanded to include other -ing ending words in chat including Triene and, the less common, Criene.
