This line contains a reference to the TV show Lost In Space and jumps back to the desert metaphor I made earlier in the song. Also, “the desert is absorption” is a line from the book 2000 Seasons

Reparations is the idea that blacks should receive some money for what we went thru during slavery. America has paid reparations to Japanese people for atrocities against them during WWII but America has never been honest enough with itself to even deal with the idea of reparations for blacks who’s ancestors were forced here thru the slave trade.

The bubonic plague, significant here because it is also referred to as “black death”. An apt metaphor for what I felt was going on in our hoods. This plague swept thru Europe in the 14th century and killed about million people.

There was a huge debate raging over the use of so called “ebonics” in schools. The ebonics program was brilliant, developed by teachers who realized the best way to reach kids was to show respect for the language they spoke in. That mission was misconstrued and presented in the media like teachers were teaching slang, and they weren’t. They were teaching english by acknowledging its natural evolution. Many so called intellectuals, especially black ones, rallied against Ebonics. As someone who plays with words for a living, I thought the program was great.

A sore spot lyric for me, because it’s a mistake. I meant to say Kerner Commission. The Warren Commision was during JFK and about the Vietnam War. The Kerner Commission was during Johnson’s presidency and investigates the causes of race riots and the pathology of the oppressed. I mixed my commissions up. Lesson learned. From then on, I never made a historical reference in my lyrics without doing my research.
