She gave up her lively youthfulness for a comfortable, yet unsatisfying long-term relationship. Her current partner isn’t as passionate or fun as her former flames, leaving her with the feeling that something is missing.

The juxtaposition between “naughty” and “nice” is reminiscent of the classic tropes surrounding Christmas: if you’re naughty Santa brings you coal, and if you’re nice Santa gives you presents. Chances are, she would have received quite a bit of coal back in the day.

There’s some great poetry in this line: the alliterative ‘N’ is nice, and “nights” and “nice” are near-homophones, giving the line a poetic flow.

Soma is a type of muscle relaxing drug. Like many other drugs, people take it when they go through tough times in life. Maybe during a breakup. Maybe during the week of finals at school. Maybe trouble at home is causing him to do it. Whatever it is, this drug is throwing him into a crazy world.

It’s also the name of a fictional drug in Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel, Brave New World. In the novel, the population voluntarily consumes Soma to dispel any anxieties or negative emotion. The saying is, “One cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments.”

A ritual drink of importance among the early Indo-Iranians and the subsequent Vedic and greater Persian cultures also bore the name “soma.”

Despite complaining about the behaviour of some of the chavs over “there”, Alex admits that some of them are old friends. And even if they go too far – overstep the line – he can’t get angry in the same way because they grew up together. Those two sides aren’t as distant as they might sometimes seem.

Similarly, this verse also refers to the mainstream of the music industry. While Alex is disdainful of the mainstream throughout the majority of the song, here, he admits that there are some modern tracks or artists that he does genuinely enjoy and respect, and that, ultimately, he is still able to recognise their talent despite their creative differences.

These are the final words of both the song and the album Whatever You Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, and suggest that for all of their differences, the young people described throughout the album are united by the same common background, and that both mainstream artists and the Monkeys are joined by their common desire to produce music that people can enjoy.
