At some point between being a waiter for a restaurant and starving yourself to pay rent, you start to realize how much easier it was back at home where rent wasn’t through the fucking roof and you weren’t a stranger to everyone and people were actually kind to you. Maybe your time is up. Maybe this life just wasn’t for you. Maybe you can’t handle it.

She kept hearing the words of her father and it kept her going.

Trying to land a career in the arts means needing a solid day job. Something less extravagant that involves calling your boss “sir”. Something I’m sure she wasn’t expecting. It wasn’t the life she wanted.

Reality started to hit her and she began losing faith in herself. Or maybe she felt homesick? Either way, a conversation with her father would surely help her decide whether to turn back or not.

And even after trying so hard and staying dedicated, he still wasn’t able to become what he wanted. Whether he was trying to be a musician or an actor or whatever — it’s tough out there and it’s not for everyone.

He probably suffered countless rejections and failures growing up which caused him to lose faith in himself.

The first character in this song wants to be somebody. His mother is naive but supportive. She’s sure that her son can be anything he wants as long as he tries but this isn’t always the case. The boy isn’t too confident in himself and he explains why.

He wants to resolve all of their problems and dole it out which means to criticize each other in a fair way in hopes of making peaceful progress. But they can’t because one of them, or maybe both, are very stubborn.

Aside from the attack on commercialism, there seems to be a hint of relationship in the theme of this verse. The next few bars tell stories of a relationship falling apart.
