His rebuttal (the 3rd verse) to this message literally comes too late as she has already faded away by the time he can explain himself.

When she says she gets enough attention on her own, she’s saying it to brag (not to plead with Kendrick to not mention her in his album) about how well she’s doing for herself as a hooker – which ties in with the defiant, “don’t feel sorry for me” tone of the previous lines.

She sardonically references the first time that she was used by three men at once (or “tossed”) as an example of how she was taught how to be a woman.

She doesn’t need Kendrick to apologize for the life she was forced into. She rejects criticism from people who can’t sympathize with her plight.

This line also marks a dramatic change in Keisha’s sister’s tone as she goes from sounding weak and vulnerable to sounding angry and forceful.

Kendrick plays on the word genes, pronouncing it like jeans to connect to a “denim” of a family gene.

If she would have been a girl cut from a cloth who had love and support for her instead of being a foster kid, she’d have learned how to respect her body and how to make others do the same, especially in the household.

She feels so far gone and so embroiled in a certain way of living that it’s easier to imagine how it’d have been to live a different life rather than fix the one she’s living.

Lots of children from Compton grew up in foster homes with no guidance or support after their parents either were killed or OD’d. This mention of “foster home” parallels the metaphor of the ghetto as an “orphanage” mentioned in the opening verse.

While the boys end up hustling on the streets and joining gangs, the girls become prostitutes to earn some money and end up being dehumanized. As we can understand by the use of the present tense I run, Keisha’s sister is still in a foster house so she’s still a teen.

The woman Kendrick characterizes knows the rhythmic jingling sound of car keys is a signal. She knows her client has removed them from the ignition and stopped following her, an indicator for her to approach his car.

K-dot paints a picture of the harsh, unfortunate reality for many young girls who grew up where Kendrick came from and in tough cities across the country.

While most people Lamar encounters through good kid, m.A.A.d city find themselves trapped in Compton and gang life, Lamar wants to follow his dream of becoming a rapper. This would allow him to “sing about” the speaker and help him live on through music when he grows his platform.

This may be a reference to Martin Luther King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, which described his hopes for a future free of racial segregation. Lamar previously compared himself to King on earlier track “Backseat Freestyle”:

Martin had a dream
Kendrick have a dream

When gunshots are fired (or the metaphorical thunder), cats and dogs, or his friends, die. It’s a reference to the old saying “It’s raining cats and dogs”, and also demonstrates some wordplay as the TV series ‘ThunderCats’ aired during Kendrick’s youth.

It’s also a metaphor of the saying, “when it rains it pours” (meaning that trouble for Dave’s brother just seems to exponentially grow and never get better).

Notice how he distorts “When thunder comes” to sound like the previous “Dun-ta-duns”

In the Nickerson Gardens Projects, which is one of the biggest section 8 housing systems in America, the concentration of people are thugs, prostitutes, and drug dealers. This life was forced on them by our government. By saying “but it’s all good,” Jay portrays the idea that he has grown accustomed to these people being from the same neighborhood.

Serpents represent those who will “snake” on you. If you don’t keep those whom you roll with in check/ keep your circle small (grass cut), there are bound to be snakes lurking. One of the gangs that originated in the Nickerson Gardens was the Bounty Hunter BLOODS.

Them serpents lurking could be a play on words referring to the garden of Eden and the story of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis; implying that serpents are also in his place tempting people.

Jay Rock is from the infamous Nickerson Gardens section 8 projects in Watts, California. He plays off the name of his project housing (“gardens”) but unlike most gardens, his was unkempt.

This is also a play on the phrase “my ass is grass.” That term is used when a person gets in trouble. If the feds pick up his cocaine from the bushes, his ass will definitely be in trouble.

After the lavish lifestyle ideology propelled by the music, who’s influence he was under, Kendrick is back among the cruel reality of Compton, a place where rivalry between gangs causes casualties, similar to a war. A victim of the the ongoing violence was his Uncle Tony, killed at Louis Burgers. Not only is Kendrick poor in a monetary sense, he and his crew are now pouring liquor on the curb in memory of his Uncle Tony.

Kendrick’s family have always been portrayed as supportive, but here his Uncle displays the kind of encouragement a lot of rappers and entertainers never experience; a belief in his abilities.

The shock of losing a supportive figure puts a permanent stain on that Louis Burgers, and exemplifies the deep ties that Kendrick has to his city. His “dreams of living life like rappers do” are interrupted by the pain that gang culture brings, and that pain is not eased by expensive clothing.
