Miles and Alex were not as quick as Taylor Swift when it came to identifying a potentially problematic partner.

This is a reference to the anti-war song “No Man’s Land” (aka “The Green Fields of France”) penned by Eric Bogle in 1976 after seeing the grave of a WWI soldier.

The original lyric:

Did they bang the drum slowly?
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?

Jason Concepción poked fun at how silly watching Jim Halpert in a “deep” drama felt via Twitter:

It got this title because Rory is the name of Nolan’s son and Harvey Dent was modeled after Robert F. Kennedy (RFK).

I <3 Saoirse Ronan, and she did a really good job here, but I hope Brooklyn is the last time that she plays a shy, angelic European girl. She has a lot of talent and I’d like to see her cast against-type rather than play another character with a lot in common with her real life persona.

Ridley Scott is the biggest snub of this year’s Oscars. His omission doesn’t make much sense, either – The Martian is as awards-friendly as anything that he’s done and it relied heavily on the director’s vision to ensure a bunch of moving parts worked in unison. Had he won, it really wouldn’t have been a lifetime achievement award.

Everyone here is deserving as well, but it’s tough to get down with putting Abrahamson over Scott – or even Todd Haynes for Carol – even though I really liked Room.

I really liked Brooklyn. Emory Cohen is going to be around for a while and Saoirse (“Sur-Sha”) Ronan is going to be a star if she isn’t already.

This movie doesn’t knock anything out of the park and doesn’t have even an outside chance at Best Picture, but it’s nice to see a movie get recognized for doing everything well rather than going for the glory and golden statues.

Side note: do studio execs see something in Domnhall Gleeson that I don’t? I think he’s very talented, but his skillset doesn’t lend itself that well to playing Mr. Steal Yo Girl, giving orders to Leo and Tom Hardy, and commanding a Sith army.

This was surprising but not undeserved. I wasn’t blown away by Dano and think Hardy was better than ‘Dris while he was on the screen, Fitzgerald was just less central than The Commandant.

There are people out there who preferred Hardy’s performance to Leo’s and I can see where they’re coming from. There were moments – especially towards the beginning – where I felt the same way. The problem is that Hardy didn’t adapt to his character’s predicaments, which made him an intriguing frenemy but a pretty dull villain. Whereas Leo’s performance was tailored to Glass’s journey and steadily improved throughout.

Regardless, this is a nice reward for Hardy’s great 2015 and the first Oscar nomination of hopefully many for one of the best actors going.

Steve Carrell, Michael Keaton, or Johnny Depp were expected to receive the final nomination in this category over Heisenberg. All were fairly deserving – Carrell and Keaton were a bit better, Depp was a bit worse – but the real snub here is Michael B. Jordan for Creed.

Ryan Coogler gave MBJ another real, complex character to work with, and he knocked it even further out of the park this time. Jordan didn’t play Adonis as “the black Rocky” or a younger copy of Apollo, he brought a character dealing with his own problems in his own way to life. We rooted for Donnie when he succeeded and empathized with him when he slipped, and the majority of that credit goes to Jordan.
