• Penalty box How To Interact With Users by Rap Genius Moderators

Only staff can put users in the penalty box. Once in the penalty box, they’re there until they’re taken out. This punishment can be the least severe (lasting only a few hours) or the most severe (lasting forever). Users in the penalty box can do nothing but message staff.

You cannot message staff while in Penalty Box, you cannot even read messages while in penalty box (it auto closes all messages when you attempt to open them).

As far as I am aware a user in the penalty box cannot message staff, which I believe needs to be fixed.

Grounds for punishment How To Interact With Users by Rap Genius Moderators

If you have thought thoroughly about the situation and realize that the only response left is punishment, here are the types of punishments (from least severe, Penalty box, to most severe, De-mod)

• Things you didn't see How To Interact With Users by Rap Genius Moderators

Someone sends you a message about being trolled or someone talks to you about how they got trolled.

Don’t get involved. (unless it’s to the level of harassment/bullying)

Let the user who messaged you know that the user who bothered them is just a troll and they’re trying to get a response, so try to tell them that it’s not worth responding.

For the most part, this should be dealt with by ignoring the troll because it’s a waste of time, but if you feel the need to respond, talk it over with the troll in an attempt to get them to stop. In either case, here’s the steps you should take:

  1. Don’t immediately retaliate: they might have hurt your feelings and you might respond in an incorrect manner that you’ll regret later.
  2. Think: take a minute to think about what the proper response would be (if you need to respond). Is it worth responding? What will you actually achieve by responding?
  3. Communicate: if you do decide that a response is required, don’t respond in a negative way. Communicate with the user, let them know it’s not cool and ask if they could stop. This is all best done behind the scenes, in chat or in a message.

Trolling How To Interact With Users by Rap Genius Moderators

This can become harassment, but a mod should be able to recognize someone who’s just trolling just to troll and someone who is trolling to harass/bully a particular individual.

One frequent form of trolling would be having an offensive username. If you see someone with a username that offends you, please let them know they need to change it and if they can’t let staff know.

As stated in the community policy, hate speech is not trill.

Porn How To Interact With Users by Rap Genius Moderators

All porn that you see should get deleted and the user that posted that porn should be reported. There’s three types of porn posters:

  • Innocent: someone just didn’t know the rules and didn’t realize what they were posting was porn. These people shouldn’t be punished, but rather just told what they did was wrong and not to do it going forward
  • Joke: someone posted it as a funny joke, trying to defy “the man” because fuck the man, they’ll post porn when they want! This user can probably be reasoned with, so talk with them and if they cool down then let someone know, but no punishment is required. If they don’t seem to care, then let staff know so the user can be put in the penalty box
  • Porn Spam: porn spammers get penalty-boxed immediately, so when you notice one let staff know and they’ll be dealt with

Someone tells you about someone being bullied/harassed in the chat/forum/PM:

  1. Hear both sides: sometimes the bullying/harassment happened in retaliation to something the user had said. After receiving the complaint, you should hit up the user who said the offensive comment and ask what the situation was. The more info you have on the situation the better.
  2. Analyze: think about the severity of the situation and how you believe you should respond. If someone is coming to you about it, it should be considered a bigger issue. However, if there were attacks from both sides, then maybe you should just warn them both to stop and no punishment will be given.
  3. Think: go back and rethink your response, especially in the case of a punishment. Think about the repercussions of your action. Think about all sides of the situation again.
  4. Respond: If you are going to punish them, see “Grounds for punishment” below (do NOT de-editor until you re-read that section and know that the user deserves to be de-editored). However, if you realize it’s not that severe, warn the user that if it happens again you’ll have no choice but to take action. Remember to take into account how the person being harassed/bullied feels when deciding what to do next.

You actually see someone being bullied/harassed in the chat/forum or someone is bullying harassing you in the chat/forum/PM to you:

  1. Think: take a minute to think about what the proper response would be. The offender may have hurt your feelings and you wouldn’t want to react in a way that might stir up more trouble. You may not know all the facts so a response might be foolish.
  2. Communicate: if the situation is not blatantly bullying/harassing (i.e. you can tell this user is just trying to hurt someone in saying what they’re saying), let the bully/harasser know that what they’re saying isn’t cool and tell them to stop.

Typically with bullying/harassing this has gone on for a while, so if they continue after you’ve told them to stop, consider a punishment (see “Grounds for punishment” below). Remember to take into account how the person being harassed/bullied feels when deciding what to do next.
