Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath details the extent of which MLK was willing to take action, and put others in harm.

During the Birmingham Race Riots King encouraged hundreds of schoolchildren to take school off, and march in the streets, taunting Public Safety Commissioner Bull Connor with their impunity.

Manipulations such as these were commonplace in the King camp, with the Reverend playing with the media’s image enough to garner worldwide sympathy.

These actions paint a picture of a much more complex and human man than textbooks and boilerplate biographies. Understanding King’s true legacy is just as important as celebrating his accomplishments.

Homophobia in hip-hop runs deep. The Sugarhill Gang weren’t the first rap group, but they were the first to make the Billboard Top 100, and it’s sad but not altogether shocking to note that making fun of gay people has always been a part of the art form.

Of course, we’ve come a long way since then, and though only ten years ago Eminem rhymed faggot with so many things that it became unremarkable, hip-hop is shedding its suspicion of the LGBT community in a major way.

Frank Ocean admitted a same-sex relationship, A$AP Rocky makes a concerted effort to avoid homophobia, and even Rick Ross thinks it’s ok to be gay.

Rap doesn’t have to be on the wrong side of history, and it doesn’t look like it will be.
