Arkansas has finally turned the corner and become a bonafide Republican stronghold, the last of the dixieland to do so. The 2014 midterm elections were the first time Republicans captured all seven constitutional offices of the state since the 1870s. Despite voting Red in presidential elections since 1968, except for 1976, 1992, and 1996 (when Southern Democrats ran, one being native son Bill Clinton) their state government and federal offices have consistently voted Democrat–until now. The state legislature was also turned over to the Republican party for the first time since the 1870s in the 2012 elections.

Arkansans also voted to raise their state’s minimum wage to $8.50/hour by 2017.

Mark Pryor lost big to ex-soldier Harvard Law grad Tom Cotton after twelve years in the Senate. Pryor came from a well-known political dynasty in Arkansas, but was swept away by a Republican wave like his former colleague Blanche Lincoln. Of all states, none has turned more sharply to the right in the Obama era as Arkansas, which was won twice by favorite son Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

Cotton won 57% of the vote, winning 62 of 75 counties. He is only the third Republican Senator from Arkansas since the 1870s.
