People often wish for what they desire without knowing what it entails, wanting a good life while remaining comfortable. Genuine growth requires being able to leave your comfort zone. As the Buddhist philosophical saying goes, “desire is the source of suffering (and pain).”

In short, remember the addage of “be careful what you wish for.”

In likening himself to the biblical Adam, Kendrick serves as a microcosm of God in being a creative individual.

As written in Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV):

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

His ability to express himself manifests in a variety of ways: the vivid worldbuilding present in his solo albums, crafting visuals through his company pgLang, teaming up with South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone for “The Heart, Part 5”’s visuals as well as an upcoming movie for Paramount+.

Rough English translation:

One person’s shadow floats on the other side where smoking started
I will not forget it for no matter its profile and fragrant towering
I started to noticed it now, it’s now, I started to understand
I arrived slightly late but I will try as usual
Oh, it’s raining Please do not get it off too much Please do not grasp both hands too much
Yes, that’s right, talk of a little dream

The upper and lower teeth are apparently not engaged.
It seems I can not do it now, I will cut all things
I guess it will take time, I will do it
I will already know what I’m going to taste
I’m sure you can bit me well with you too
Yes, that is, a stupid stupid stupid thing

With that little voice that I can not hear
That neck caught still unreliable
For what reason do you always pray for it?
In a mistake that has not finished yet

I shout at a loud voice to get distracted
And when you look down at the bottom, and then staring at it staring
I am looking at it but it’s not like that
Being embarrassed, it’s not stupid, it’s not like that.
To annoyance, to pain, to just apologize to sorrow
Hey, the beginning of today is the continuation Continue to continue

After deeper sleep
Eventually the continuation of dreams
With the awake morning light
I will forget everything

It is the same thing as usual though it makes me sad
The dream that time is casting
A feeling that will kill me now

With that little voice that I can not hear
That neck caught still unreliable
For whom are you always praying for it?
In a mistake that has not finished yet

Many rappers' subject matter is about their supposed lavish lifestyle. They speak about how much money is in their bank accounts, what possessions they own, and the type of beautiful women they have sex with regularly. Most likely they’re lying, whilst when Nas describes his life, it’s completely true.

After ascending from a “peasant, to a prince, to a motherfucking king” in “King Kunta”, feeling lost and jaded in the four corners of the cocoon throughout “These Walls”, and “finding himself” during an alcoholic binge in the hotel room on ‘u’ (as he contemplated suicide) - Kendrick continues to add to the poem he reads on the final track “Mortal Man”.

Kendrick fights off the Lucy (the female personification of the world’s evils) throughout this song, and decides to return home to Compton, where he hopes to remedy his issues.

Continue the poem on “Hood Politics”.
