He was not only addicted to sleep medication, he was also addicted to Vicodin, Valium, Ambien, and Methadone pills. Em eventually got out of rehab just to find out his best friend Proof was killed. He then relapsed right after that taking more prescription drugs and then accidentally overdosed on Christmas of 2007 in his bathroom.

The backlash against Em’s lyrics included many attempts to censor his music, including MTV (this was when MTV played music videos).

But, without Em, even the critics feel the empty space he used to fill. They hate to like him, but even Em’s harshest critics know he means a lot to the rap game, so they can’t just completely shut him down.

Also, there is a subtle but perfect example of antanaclasis (repeating sounds, in different meanings): MTV is pronounced “em-tee-wee,” like em-pty-wi- in the following line. Genius.

Em’s first ever single “My Name Is” started the hook with the lyrics “hi, my name is”. Since it was such a big hit and played so much, people now associated the word “hi” with Eminem whenever they hear it.

Don’t believe us? Try listening to someone saying “my name is” to you without saying “chka chka Slim Shady” in your head.

Also, there might be another layer of meaning there: “high” is a homonym for “hi” and at the time, Eminem was a self-proclaimed symbol of drug use (Drug Ballad is an iconic song off the same album). So, the line also makes sense interpreted like ‘you think of my name whenever you say “high”’. Parallel valid meanings are commonly hidden in Em’s art, see e.g. here and here. [Em, even if this wasn’t intentional, just tell us you meant that, like you tell Slaughterhouse to do!]
