Although the idea of “Paris” in the context of their relationship has been discussed there is also another possible meaning.

Listening to the whole song Paris, it is very likely a euphemism for cocaine and chasing the high. With “Paris” representing the carefree state he is in when high.

“Midnight” was teased by Coldplay before it’s release.

It was their first (with the exception of “Atlas” for the Hunger Games soundtrack) release of new material since Mylo Xyloto in 2011. It later appeared on the band’s sixth LP, Ghost Stories.

The song represents a change in style, with Chris Martin’s heavily processed vocals being the focal point which drew comparisons to Bon Iver.

This sets the theme for much of the rest of the song setting up the comparison with nicotine addiction and his lover. Nicotine addiction is uncontrollable and so has his relationship became, he doesn’t want to control either despite the damage they do.

Further worldplay to compare cigarettes and his lover, his situation with his lover has became poor or a ‘drag’. His use of this word obviously hints toward the other use of ‘drag’ being the inhale from a cigarette.

This line is probably the reason Kurt identified enough with the song to perform it.

Imagine your perfect sunbeam, it shines through just about anything and can create a lovely image.

In contrast, humans (especially Kurt as a person with a really low self image) are less perfect, god supposedly gave them free will and it can twist people. I think in a way Kurt performed this song because it identified with his own insecurities about himself.

A recording for Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, this track was originally written by the Vaselines as a cynical twist on an older Christian hymn ‘Jesus wants me for a sunbeam’.

Along with “Molly’s Lips” and “Son of a Gun” this marks the 3rd Vaselines song Nirvana covered.

At this performance, Cobain dedicated this song as to the late River Phoenix, who passed away from a drug overdose in 1993.

This song appears to explore the themes of public figures being followed by the media constantly.

In some ways the most appropriate case would be Princess Diana who was constantly followed by paparazzi (and indeed they indirectly led to her accident). Once divorced from Prince Charles, she faced a constant battle to stop media presence from following her. Even following her fatal crash, paparazzi swarmed around the incident and she was reported to say “leave me alone” as the photographers were removed from the scene.

As long as someone out there enjoys their music the critics' opinions are unimportant. They don’t need their endorsement to be successful in their real aim (pleasing people with their music).

The final line here is borrowed from/a tribute to the same line in Refused’s “Liberation Frequency” from their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come. Williams herself stated that this line inspired the entire pre-chorus.

Some critics disapproved of Paramore’s music from the first album and others predicted a ‘Sophomore Slump’ for Riot!

This is obviously a metaphor comparing wine tasting and Paramore’s music. Basically it’s middle fingers to the critics.

Hayley once said:

it’s all about Jeremy leaving us and us feeling like there’s an empty space.

So it is possible her feeling of being empty is referencing this event. It is likely considering it is one of the album’s central themes.
