This is an expression of Morrissey’s depression and suicidal thoughts: he tries to turn his dark thoughts into dramatized romantic fantasies in order to try and make sense of them. He wishes to die during a moment of joy, without any of the anxiety or anger that usually dominates his life.
This could also refer to the speaker’s quiet unrequited love of the person he’s with. That would rather they die to be together than confess his emotions because he’s too afraid of ruining their friendship.
Under a suicidal interpretation, this line is referring to the idea that the speaker just doesn’t want to die alone and they want someone to be with them in their misery. Or, that he doesn’t have the guts to kill himself and that things would be much easier if the burden would get taken off of himself and transferred to some imagined bus instead.
These lines also echo the lines from Shakespeare’s Othello: “If it were now to die, t'were now to be most happy,” which are also quoted in Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. Given than Woolf has had a tremendous influence upon Morrissey (Shakespeare’s Sister is based upon her novel To The Lighthouse), the placement of these lines in “There Is a Light” suggest not his own suicidal thoughts or depression, but rather the idea that he does not want the moment he is sharing with the other person in the narrative to end/be ruined.
The second and last lines of the chorus also indicate how highly he thinks of the other person. If he’s going to die, he would be happiest to be able to die while in the presence of this person.
