Fayetteville and Raleigh are both located in North Carolina (the state mentioned in the previous line). Raleigh is the capital of the state and Fayetteville is another big city in the state. Anywhere Wale goes – any country, continent, or even state in this case – he is always welcomed and known in the biggest areas by the most people.

In these lines, Anthony Kiedis pays homage to California.

Aptly named the “Bear Flag,” the flag of the State of California features an illustration of a its state animal, a dark brown California grizzly bear.

Kiedis references the “American man” as an “Angeleno,” a person who lives in Los Angeles. Wordplay (“Angel-eno”) is used to draw upon angel and devil imagery – even if the man is an “Angeleno,” the devil cares about him because he’s somehow wicked. Kiedis may also be using these references to allude to having a “wild” side, like a grizzly bear.

As mentioned in the work itself, “Emit Remmus” is about the relationship between an American man and an English woman. The lyrics are partly inspired by Anthony Kiedis' friendship with Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice).

It should be noted that “Emit Remmus” is “summer time” spelled backwards.

“Around the World” was released on September 14, 1999 as the second single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' album, Californication.

The song details the love that Anthony Kiedis has for the beauty of the world, and his gratitude for the unique experiences he has had while touring with the RHCP. Lyrically, Kiedis was inspired by Roberto Benigni’s 1997 Italian comedy-drama, Life Is Beautiful.

Cohn is a Jew immersed in the culture of the heavily Protestant Deep South (aka “Bible Belt”), at least for the evening. This line is sung almost tongue-in-cheek, as in this experience is so good that it might convert me!

Traditionally, citizens of the Deep South place a lot of emphasis on enjoying the little things in life, appreciating what you have, and redemption for past sins. Although he is not Christian, Marc obviously connects with this on many levels during his visit.

Cohn spoke about this line directly in an interview for the Chicago Tribune

It’s so funny — people often think that I’m Christian or born-again, from not only that song, but others. In a way, I like that. There’s nothing clear about what I’m writing, in terms of spirituality. But to me, that line could have only been written by a Jew. It’s such a Jewish line, and I love that.

They didn’t actually bring Cohn down to meet Muriel. Cohn and his companions were simply on Highway 61 when they stopped in the Hollywood Cafe to get some food.

Perhaps “they” refers to fate.

Muriel was an elderly African-American woman who would play the piano at the Hollywood Cafe. She also happened to have a great impact on Marc Cohn’s life. He described their meeting as thus:

She was real curious, she seemed to have some kind of intuition about me, and I ended up telling her about my family, my parents, how I was a musician looking for a record deal, the whole thing. Then, it must have been about two in the morning, she asks me up to sing with her and we do about an hour, me and this lady I’d never met before, hardly a song I knew so she’s yelling the words at me. Then at the end, as the applause is rising up, she leans over and whispers in my ear, she’s whispering, You’ve got to let go of your mother, child, she didn’t mean to die, she’s where she’s got to be and you’re where you have to be, child, it’s time to move on.

Cohn made sure to see the famous Reverend Al Green when he went to Memphis. Al Green is an ordained Baptist minister who bought a church in Memphis back in 1976.

Yet another indication of the important cohesion of Gospel and Blues.

The journey from Union Avenue to Graceland is symbolic of the journey leading to success and fame. Following this path is akin to following Elvis from his origins to his eventual epic success.

Union Avenue is likely mentioned because Sam Phillips' studios, called Memphis Recording Service, were located at 706 Union Avenue. Elvis' start on his journey to fame and fortune is usually attributed to the success of “Blues Suede Shoes” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” the latter of which was originally recorded at Sam Phillips' studio when Elvis was signed to Sun Records.

The feelings Cohn has are too surreal at this point. He went to Memphis for one purpose, but seems to be having new revelations with every corner he turns.
