Translations is probably hyperbolic. Shakespeare’s works are an archaic form of the language, but still very much Modern English. As opposed to Middle English, still somewhat understandable, and Old English, which really would require translation.

Hockey is one of the most popular sports in Canada, and its official winter sport, and as such, it would be understandable that hockey would be present in K'naan’s life once he moved.

But here, that’s not the case, rather puck is a pun on the puck in hockey and the onomatopoeia for the sound of a gun shot, a reminder that his new home is also violent and dangerous.
