Nas and Millenium Thug discuss the issues with the US Government and how it hold people back.
When looked at collectively, the verses tell the story of a made up person that is symbolic of so many people in the ghetto, and even the political figures Nas talks about in the outro.
In the first verse, his father is dead and mother a junkie so the narrator turns to crime to support himself and his family. The second verse talks about his time in the streets and the violence of getting involved in crime. In the third, the narrator has been arrested and is in prison, praying for hope. In the fourth verse, the narrator has been released and nothing has gotten better. He’s just lost more friends and even those around him are breaking from the stress.
Quite the uplifting song.
This song is about 2 young black boys, possibly bothers, cousins or kin to each other in one way or another. One chooses the life of crime the other chooses the military. There is an exchange of letters between the two…one is explaining of the plights of prison, while the other talks of war, the emotional traumas one experiences. The prisoner wishes to be in the war shooting dudes, just clean fun…in the end they conclude, WAR and PRISON are nothing but big businesses.
I be NAS #1 fan. Born in Kenya, moved to states at 11, I am 34 and I have loved this dude like a brother since I landed to America. One of the best and illest lyricists in our times.
