The use of the term self-made makes the listener skeptical of whether this prophet is the real deal or some crackpot who’s spouting nonsense, as a lot of people would be inclined to believe.

The Irish Republican Army was notorious for their terroristic tactics in attempts to gain independence from England.

These people beat their fellow citizens over something as trivial as race and then salute the Union Jack, the national flag of the UK, to show their patriotism.

These “revolutionaries” live in the slums claiming that they’re living like the poor they’re supposedly helping, but they do cocaine, often known as a rich man’s drug, instead of sniffing glue, as that’s all the poor people can afford.

But hey, which would you rather do?

More commonly know as simply a perm, is a hair style that was popular in the 1970s.

The evil eye is a symbol of ill will and illness. By saying the prophet gives the narrator this, it shows the prophet is distrustful of the narrator as he is a white man, and so, in the prophet’s eyes, responsible for all the hardships he and his people have suffered.

Another example of why the narrator believes people aren’t nearly as supportive of racial equality as they say. It’s common knowledge that black people are often forced to live in bad neighborhoods and that the higher the black population, the less likely whites are to live there.

Fire is often a symbol of rebirth, such as the phoenix, as well as destruction. So while the idea of a Black Messiah may seem unthinkable to some, the narrator believes the coming will destroy the evil in the world and allow for the rebirth of a more loving world.

But in the meantime, and potentially to make sure the Black Messiah does return, people need to stop ignoring the issues plaguing society and work on being more loving and accepting.

The narrator, on the other hand, is slightly more hopeful. He believes that the Messiah will return, and as said in the Bible, bring paradise with him and rule over this paradise.
