We feel you Jermaine — as would Drake, him also being on one.

Being “on one” means being under the influence of a drug. When you have previously referred to love as a drug, this line is simply a way of saying “Fuck it, I’m in love!”

Clever little double meaning here, too. There’s the traditional sense (fucked up), which in itself can be from two things: the fact that he’s been up all night drinking or that he can’t have her, but he’s also stuck on one girl.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can break my heart. Whether they’re offhand comments that weren’t thought about or someone trying to cause problems, words are one of the most powerful (and as a result, potentially hurtful) things around. There’s a reason

Watch out in the times that the winners (rich, successful, people who have it good) will fall, and the losers (underdogs, poor, people who are struggling) will rise up.

A reference to the Bible (Matthew 20:16) when Jesus says:

So the last will be first, and the first will be last.

Some of the things Whitman “consider’d” while writing this.

The first means no one knows the future.

The second means why does it matter? I’m enjoying what does come, and even if it isn’t enjoyable, something of worth is gained just through experiencing it.

The third means he doesn’t know what that experience is or will be, but he is experiencing it. It is also a reference to the reader. He is looking to the future (his readers who haven’t read this yet, and possibly haven’t even been born). The second part makes reference to this not having experience what he has to offer yet, both to his readers, because they haven’t read his work yet, and to the people he is observing because they don’t notice him.

Arrest:
1. to seize (a person) by legal authority or warrant; take into custody: The police arrested the burglar.
2. to catch and hold; attract and fix; engage: The loud noise arrested our attention.
3. to check the course of; stop; slow down: to arrest progress.
4. Medicine/Medical . to control or stop the active progress of (a disease): The new drug did not arrest the cancer.

Here, Whitman means the second definition. People take in these experiences and hold on to them. Arrest, too, is an aggressive verb, so again, Whitman phrases it this way to show how people go into experiences without holding anything back.

The experiences things and people offer aren’t fleeting. They remain for all time, whether because they themselves last forever (though that’s incredibly unlikely) or because those experiences and lessons affect people who later go on to affect others in a way different than they would have had the experience never occurred.

Addressing the horizon as an equal, the speaker is “face to face” with the sun as it is only “half an hour” from setting. It is the end of the work day and he is on his way home on the Brooklyn ferry.

While “face to face” could come off as confrontational, here it is more a sign of familiarity; the routine of going home, the camaraderie of doing so with others.
