The hectic graph of Everton’s total activity shows up a few things. Firstly, that they didn’t get many accurate crosses into the Chelsea penalty area. They had few real scoring opportunities in the first half, and when Steven Naismith scored on the stroke of half time it came largely against the run of play.

In the second half, Everton came out to rigidly defend. Setting up in two lines of four, they frustrated the Chelsea players with their discipline, leaving no space between the lines for creative players to work. The huge amount of clearances around the edge of the box shows just how well Everton did in stopping Chelsea getting too close to their goal.

Hatem Ben Arfa, Newcastle’s best player scored a pretty easy goal, which is a change from his sensational goals which he tends to score more often

Manager Alan Pardew hailed him as “unplayable” after the game:

He was magnificent. There’s nobody that can do that to a team other than Suarez, or a couple of others. Hatem was on fire today… His concentration today was spot on and I think if he gets some consistency in his game he will be not only a threat for us, but a threat for France in the World Cup.

A hard-fought game that turned on several controversial decisions by referee Mike Atkinson.

Jozy Altidore’s goal was disallowed after it had rolled in because the referee refused to play advantage after defender Bacary Sagna had fouled him. As it would have been an equalising goal at the time, this infuriated the fans and empassioned manager Paolo Di Canio.

Di Canio was sent off to the stands after telling the fourth official to send him off as he may as well complete his apparently abysmal day at the office:

The referee has to wait and see how the action finishes. He can come back and give the decision, maybe give the free-kick. But when there is a body to body with Jozy Altidore and Sagna at the edge of the box, he has to wait to the finish of this moment and not stop the game straight away. That was a clear, big, big, big mistake.

It can happen to anyone, to make a mistake or a very bad decision and that probably cost [us] a chance or two to get some points today. That can happen.

I said to him [Atkinson] if you want to complete a perfect job, you can send me off. He took it serious and sent me off. So next time I probably won’t invite the referee to send me off.

Tottenham dominated a Norwich side that seemed to set out for damage limitation from the off. The main difference between the two sides was their creativity. New signing Christian Eriksen made his debut for Tottenham and provided the incisiveness they’ve previously lacked in the attacking third of the pitch, assisting their opening goal and providing a threat throughout with his passing.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, cutting inside from the left of the pitch, benefited the most from Spurs’s crisp passing play. A deft curling finish for his first and an easy tap in from a low cross for his second caps a great performance.
