As a form of capital punishment, burning has a long history as a method in crimes such as treason, heresy, and witchcraft.
The particular form of execution by burning in which the condemned is bound to a large stake is more commonly called burning at the stake.
Here, Chino is declaring that in a past life (in the 1800s) he was burned at the stake.
It’s an interesting fact that last burnings at stake in the most parts of western world were recorded back in the 1700s. The last burning in England happened in the year 1612 and it’s 1732 in Spanish colonial world. Chino must have been an exceptional case to be burned in 1800s.
