Outside of prison, everyone wars with each other, race and place matters.

Most prisons are segmented into racial groups who keep to themselves. People who had friends of all colors outside of prison will join racist groups in prison, simply to be part of a group and be protected. And gang affiliations certainly do matter in prison – if anything, they matter more! So I think what’s being said is that people who go to prison will side will side with a “pride”-group of some sort in order to survive the best they can, leading to more conflict and violence.
