Jean is referencing “amp” as bolstering his ego but she is also referring to the musical equipment, forshadowing what she will reveal about who she is in the upcoming verses.

From her perspective:

He knew when guys on the block would see him, they would try and stop them from being together. Therefore, he was hesitant to step out with her.

He thought she was above him and that she was unattainable. He references the fabric of silk and linen (expensive and high-end) and fatigues (cheap and low-grade quality) as metaphors for their social status.

All the men in the neighborhood wanted her.
