Nice little allusion to a fire in a building, as well as the idiom, “smoke and mirrors”. Stage players would deceive the audience with smoke and reflecting mirrors. Sydney asserts that she can’t and will not be deceived, but she won’t allow others to be either.

“The 27 club” is a group of musicians that died at the age of 27. Musicians who are part of the club: Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Kobain (of Nirvana), Jim Morrison of The Doors, and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones.

Watsky cleverly integrates their names into this verse. Watsky is currently 27, but on September 15, he won’t be. He’s not going die anytime soon.

He made that jump to join the 27 Club but they kicked him out and he came back from the dead.

Watsky really did try to make a jump – literally, he is referencing his 35-foot stage dive that could have killed him. This is brought up again in the lines:

I try to jump and spread my wings like I’m a bird of prey
But I hit the earth and break a motherfucker’s vertebrae

Alhough he’s been with all of these women physically and emotionally he’s doesn’t retain any special feelings for them. He’s upset that he can’t shake loneliness even while being with others in bed. Making him more depressed because when with a women he is reminded that he remains lonely even as couple.

Miles sneaks in a reference to Three Dog Night’s song “One”:
