How is mercy twice a blessing?

This is the buildup to Portia’s statement about mercy being an attribute of God.

Why the rain metaphor?

  • Rain from the heavens (as oppose to just the sky) would be considered something holy and cleansing.

  • Notice the use of “gentle,” indicating that mercy is also forgiving.

The juxtaposition of “place beneath” and “heaven” may also suggest one must have higher status in order to truly be able to show compassion to the lesser.

Similarly, just as you can’t force the rain to fall from the clouds, you can’t force or “strain” mercy – it has to well up and emerge of its own accord, just as the “gentle rain from heaven” does upon the earth.

His profession was once provided free for the people around him. Now it’s his official investment with rhyming now being his career.

Nice money puns here:

Change:
1. Something different.
2. Small amounts or currency (pennies, nickels, dimes, etc)

To “coin a phrase” is an another way of saying to “invent a phrase.”

This could be a reference to politics. ‘For the people’ references a common viewpoint among marxists and even communists. ‘Capital gain’ is a contrasting reference to the capitalistic regimes, wich throughout history have gained a lot more momentum then the communistic ones.

Munchies – eating after you’ve been high for a while. Most people aren’t actually hungry but like they way their food feels in their mouth.

Contrary to popular belief, Tove Lo, isn’t actually talking about the brand Twinkies. She admits to thinking they were a name for cookies and that she liked the word.

After Lo’s night indulging in drinking/smoking, she eats a lot of junk food. The alcohol poisoning and the rejecting stomach takes over and she vomits anything she eats.

Throwing up in the tub is a metaphor for Tove being unable (1) to keep the sweet things in life or (2) cleanse herself of the memories.
