From John Singleton’s iconic hood drama, Boyz n the Hood’s block party scene. Ferris and his team of Bloods try to start problems, Doughboy (Ice Cube) intercepts and shows off his weaponry to calm the situation.

The “belly of the beast” is a phrase that alludes to a fairly hard situation. Lupe continues to use it to express the street environment; this branches into a metaphor for making it out as a result of success.

The contrasting juxtaposition is interesting here, as dreams are pleasant and nightmares are scary; both are common during sleep.

Judging from the second line, she’s struggling with identity (maybe in the form of perception). Is she a bad person or a good person? A question many asks themselves, when trying to discover who they are.

This can have two meanings:

  • Nightmares usually evoke responses such as fear, terror, and discomfort. Unable to define herself she wishes to be something better.

  • She’s scared but she still feels good.
