From John Singleton’s iconic hood drama, Boyz n the Hood’s block party scene. Ferris and his team of Bloods try to start problems, Doughboy (Ice Cube) intercepts and shows off his weaponry to calm the situation.

This is a cool and interesting scene as John Singleton never mentioned when the sound effects of the gun shots from Ferris’s Uzi would go off. So every reaction you see in this scene is completely real, not to mention Ice Cube almost runs over someone’s leg at 1:28.

One of the many scenes referenced in Hip Hop lyrics:

And like Bruce Leroy, I got that glow – LMFAO
I glow like Leroy
My from like ShoNuff
– Wiz Khalifa
Glow like Leroy, you should see boy go – Lupe Fiasco

This is the final fight scene of the film, The Last Dragon, in which Bruce Leroy fights the evil master, ShoNuff. He finds his glow where mind, body, and soul are synced into one.

This scene is taken from Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. It’s Radio Raheem’s “The Story of Love and Hate” monologue that defines the entirety of the film.

FUNNY LIKE I’M A CLOWN?

He’s letting her know that he’s a good person.

A reference to the 1990 film, Goodfellas, in which Joe Pesci co-starred. Ironically, Pesci’s character, Tommy DeVito, was far from a good Samaritan. Rather he was violent, aggressive, angry, and even a little sadistic.

Probably one of Lupe’s favorite phrases to use:

The belly of the beast, you know I’m from it – “I Gotcha”

They say the game has the belly of the beast“Real Recognize Real” (and reiterated in the “BET Cypher”).

The belly of the beast, these streets are demon abs – “Strange Fruition”

The “belly of the beast” is a phrase that alludes to a fairly hard situation. Lupe continues to use it to express the street environment; this branches into a metaphor for making it out as a result of success.

The contrasting juxtaposition is interesting here, as dreams are pleasant and nightmares are scary; both are common during sleep.

Judging from the second line, she’s struggling with identity (maybe in the form of perception). Is she a bad person or a good person? A question many asks themselves, when trying to discover who they are.

This can have two meanings:

  • Nightmares usually evoke responses such as fear, terror, and discomfort. Unable to define herself she wishes to be something better.

  • She’s scared but she still feels good.
