Referring to Jim Morrison of The Doors, who was called the Lizard King.

Jim wrote a poem called Celebration of the Lizard King, which would later become a song that The Doors performed as part of their set every now and then.

Some say it’s a self-proclaimed name, others say it was a misunderstanding by the fans when hearing this line:

Either way, he became the Lizard King. Mod has claimed to be influenced by Jim and Oscar Wilde:

Frank Sinatra did a cover of Ted Koehler and Harold Arlen’s song, “I’ve Got The World On A String”.

Mainly the metaphor asserts that one is in complete control of their life, rather than being manipulated. Like he said in the Raw Cypher:

I will not drown in the risin' tide of conformity

Remember what Cobb said in the first scene, about an idea being he most resilient parasite:

What’s the most resilient parasite?A bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm…An idea. Resilient, highly contagious. Once an idea’s taken hold in the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate. A person can cover it up, ignore it- but it stays there.

See the problem here. The last three center walls are impossible to get into or out of. The whole time, Cobb has been testing her. He’s not supposed to know how the maze works because Mal will ruin their plans as Ariadne begins to say during Eame’s dream (Level 3):

COBB: Did Eames add any features?

ARIADNE: Yes.

“Deception” is an interesting word to use in the first scene, as it makes the audience think. This leads people to think about the word “inception” and it’s meaning.

Deception is the act of one person trying to persuade another that something is true. Deceive them.

This happens throughout the whole movie, in order to obtain information. While inception refers to a beginning of someone or something.

With this story, Nolan has created a new definition for inception: the idea of deceiving one’s self. Furthering the challenging notion of whether Cobb in reality or a dream state.
