‘3 on the tree’ refers to an old-style column shifter. The “three" refers to the number of gears available. Wheres a five-speed transmission has 1 through 5, and a six-speed 1 through 6 gears, older cars had fewer gears: 1-2-3 i.e., first, second, and third gear.

Manual-transmission cars no longer have the shifter on the steering column, but it’s fairly common with automatic transmissions, especially on trucks and other larger vehicles.

And of course ‘3 on the tree’ works as a metaphor for the three MCs.

The Roland TR-808 drum machine is, along with the Technics SL-1200 and the Akai MPC, one of the most important instruments in the history of hip-hop (and, for that matter, house, electro, Miami bass, etc.)

Released in 1980, the TR-808 was one of the first programmable drum machines. It was especially popular among hip-hip artists due to its ability to produce extreme low-frequency bass drum sounds.
