Redman and Erick Sermon sample the intro loop from James Brown’s classic “The Payback” in this song.

The foundation of hip-hop was built on sampling without clearance, but Redman is likely referencing the case of Biz Markie being sued in 1992 over an uncleared sample on his song “Alone Again.” This case was seen as a turning point for the sampling process in hip-hop as a lot of samples became very expensive to clear or the original artist would own the publishing to the sampling song.

Redman does not want to get caught up in a copyright infringement case so he made sure the original artists got credit as James Brown and George Clinton among others are listed as writers on the songs in which he sampled their music.
